3 Ways To Create Movement With Pads 🎹

Synth pads are one of the simplest yet most beautiful sounds to incorporate into a track.

But just because they’re easy to use, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be creative with them. Here are 3 ways to create dynamic, evolving pads inspired by the music of Marsolo 🤌

1️⃣ Choose The Right Pad
Finding a good pad sound is usually straightforward, but the real creativity comes when you tweak its character. Adjust parameters like the ADSR envelope—especially increasing the attack to allow the sound to evolve.

Another trick? Experiment with other synth sounds that aren’t traditionally labelled as “pads,” like chords or leads, and tweak their sustain to transform them into lush pad sounds.

2️⃣ Get Creative With Patterns
Instead of sticking to the usual sustained long-note patterns, try crafting patterns with more melodic interest, similar to the way you would approach synth lead melodies. This not only adds complexity to your track but helps your pads take on a more prominent, engaging role in your tracks.

3️⃣ Let Effects Do the Heavy Lifting
Effects are the secret sauce for creating evolving pads. As we mentioned in the Marsolo tutorial, filters are key—not just for shaping the frequency sweet spots but for using LFOs and frequency automation to add movement to a sound.

Don’t stop there—throw in some modulation effects like phasers or chorus to create rich, swirling textures that transform static pads into dynamic soundscapes.

How Many Melodies Is Too Many?

One of the best parts of making music for me, is adding all those melodic layers 🎹 I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets so inspired at times that the melodies just keep stacking up.

But, as fun as this process is, there comes a time when we need to be selective over which ones we use to avoid muddying up our mix.

There is, however, a popular melody-writing technique used by artists such as Chris Stussy, Gaskin, Max Dean, & Alisha which allows us to get the best of both worlds.

We can begin the process by adding loads of very basic layers with segments of different melodies.

We can then take this one step further, by adding a few more developed patterns, as shown here, to help give the track momentum.

Creative Vocal Processing Techniques 🎙️

Vocal processing is more than just adding the usual suspects—compression, reverb, and delay. While those are essential, pushing the boundaries with creative manipulation can make your vocals truly stand out 🎤✨

Here’s a technique I’ve been loving lately:
🔹 Take a longer adlib-style phrase and split it into two segments.
🔹 Place each segment on separate channels, each with its own unique effects chain 🎨.
🔹 For example, I’ll add a high-feedback delay to the tail end of a sample, creating a subtle yet dynamic effect that helps the vocal evolve and even act like an SFX transition.

This small tweak can add so much character and movement to your vocal lines. Give it a shot next time you’re processing vocals! 👊

Create Unique Acid Sequences WITHOUT PLUGINS 👻

There’s a common myth in music production that you need a specific plugin to nail a particular sound. While plugins like ABL or Acid V are fantastic for that iconic 303 vibe, I’d argue you can achieve something just as unique with samples—no plugins required.

Here’s one way to do it 👇

1️⃣ Start by choosing a bass sample with plenty of character, ideally one with rich high-frequency textures. Use an auto filter, crank up the resonance, and sweep through the cutoff to isolate those sweet spots in the higher range.
2️⃣ Add an Ableton Arpeggiator MIDI effect, set it to 16th notes, and resample the pattern while adjusting the sample’s start point to create your own evolving acid sequence.
3️⃣ Take your new sequence, drop it into Simpler, and hit slice mode. Then, load a MIDI sequencer like Sting, and you’ll have a totally unique acid loop ready to go. 🎹

👉👉 👉 Save this trick and give it a shot the next time you’re chasing that classic acid sound. You might just surprise yourself with the results 🤯

In a scene where trends often dominate, Marsolo stands out with a truly unique sound.

One aspect of his productions that immediately draws me to his tunes, is those hypnotic resonant synths and powerful basslines.
